How Does a Volvo EV Work?
How does the Volvo EV get all of these perks? Well, for starters, instead of a gasoline engine, a Volvo EV utilizes a battery-and-motor setup. For a Single Motor (such as the base Volvo EX40), a single motor is mounted behind the rear wheels and powered by a strong battery. A dual-motor configuration (such as the standard powertrain for the Volvo EX60) puts a motor behind each axle, with the battery powering both.
No gas engine means you won't have to worry about transmission mishaps, oil changes, oil filter replacement, or anything like that. Your battery and motor powertrain can also often have more horsepower and torque than gas-only competitors.

The Volvo EV charger type is J1772 and CCS1 ports, giving you access to the most common network of public charging stations across the nation. You can also receive the official Volvo EV charger NACS adapter, which means that you can also charge at Tesla Supercharging Stations across the nation.
Your Volvo Cars app can lead you to public power stations, and we provide services to install a charging station at your home. There are three options for charging your Volvo EV:
- Level 1: Home Outlets. This option lets you connect to a basic, three-pronged wall outlet. This is an extremely slow charging process, and should only be used to top off your battery or give you a few miles of range while running errands locally.
- Level 2: Designated Stations. A Level 2 charging port will charge the vehicle's battery quicker, typically overnight or throughout a workday. You can have these installed at home (which may be costly, but time-effective) or go to a public one.
- Level 3: DC Fast Charging Stations. A Level 3 charging station charges your battery from 10% to 80% in well under 30 minutes.2

2026 Volvo EX30

It has a maximum range of 305 miles5 with both dual-motor powertrains, so you get the most responsive engines while having more than enough range to commute to work for a week without needing to recharge.
